Map the space before choosing the lamp
Measure your desk and note where your monitor, notebook and hands sit. A lamp with a base needs a clear area; a clamp needs a suitable edge; a monitor light needs a compatible screen. Start with these physical limits before comparing features.
Choose the format around your task
An adjustable arm lets you move light toward a page or a detailed task. A monitor-mounted light bar can keep the desktop free. Neither format is universally better: the useful question is where you want the light to fall and whether the fixture will get in your way.
Understand the controls
Brightness and color temperature are different controls. Check which are adjustable and whether the lamp remembers your settings. A sensor can automate adjustments, but you may still prefer direct controls. For a replaceable-bulb lamp, some of these characteristics depend on the bulb you buy.
Check the details that are easy to miss
